It was an ordinary day as I drove through town, not expecting anything out of the ordinary. But then, who do I spot on the side of the road? None other than Tony Stark—yes, the Tony Stark, aka Iron Man—stranded and looking rather out of place without his suit flying him off to save the world. Even superheroes, it turns out, aren’t immune to car trouble.
I pulled over, because, come on, it’s Tony Stark! Turns out, his suit had decided to take a nap, and Tony, the genius billionaire, found himself waiting for roadside assistance. We ended up sitting there, chatting like two regular guys—one battling supervillains and the other, mental health challenges.
You see, I’ve built the Mental Health Warrior Program, a self-help approach based my own battles with Bipolar Disorder, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders, and PTSD. It’s designed to help people, including myself, triumph over life’s toughest challenges. Tony and I may come from different worlds, but we quickly realized we’re both warriors in our own way.
As we talked, I shared three key lessons I’ve learned on my mental health journey—lessons that have helped me keep moving forward, even when life throws its hardest punches. Tony, as it turns out, could relate to each of them, and he had some pretty epic stories to back them up!
Lesson 1: Your Greatest Enemy is Yourself
I told Tony about how, for years, I felt like my mental health challenges were unbeatable. Whether it was Bipolar Disorder making me feel out of control, or anxiety convincing me that I wasn’t capable, the biggest battle I faced was always the one inside my own head.
“Your mind can become your own worst enemy,” I said. “I used to believe that my challenges controlled me—that I wasn’t strong enough to fight them. But over time, I realized that my greatest enemy wasn’t the challenges themselves; it was how I let them defeat me before I even got started.”
Tony’s Takeaway:
Tony nodded thoughtfully. “I know exactly what you mean. The toughest battles I’ve fought weren’t with Thanos or Ultron—they were with myself. I’ve got this suit that can take on anything, but it’s no good if I’m stuck in my own head, doubting myself or letting guilt eat me alive.”
He paused for a moment, reflecting. “I’ve been my own worst enemy more times than I care to admit, but once I realized that, it changed everything. I stopped letting my self-doubt hold me back and started using it to push myself forward.”
Lesson 2: Tools Help, But the Real Power is Within
Next, I shared how, for a long time, I leaned heavily on external tools—to manage my mental health. And while they’re important, what I’ve learned is that the real power lies in how I use them. The tools are there to help, but they’re not the solution in and of themselves. The real change comes from within.
“I used to think that if I just found the right tool, it would fix everything,” I told Tony. “But then I realized that the tools are only as good as the effort I put into using them. The real power comes from inside me, from my determination to take control of my life.”
Tony’s Takeaway:
Tony grinned. “People think I’ve got it all figured out because of my gadgets, but tech is just a tool—it’s only as good as the person using it. I used to think my suit could solve everything, but at the end of the day, it’s what I do with it that matters.”
He leaned back, looking a little more relaxed. “You know, I’ve tried to hide behind my tech more than once, using it as a shield from dealing with my real issues. But you’re right—it’s not about the tools. It’s about what’s inside you, and how you choose to use those tools to build a stronger version of yourself.”
Lesson 3: Keep Moving Forward, No Matter What
Finally, I shared the most important lesson I’ve learned as a Mental Health Warrior: Resilience. There have been days when I’ve felt like giving up, when my mental health challenges seemed too overwhelming. But no matter how many setbacks I faced, I’ve learned that the key is to keep moving forward. Even on the hardest days, progress happens one step at a time.
“It’s easy to get stuck when things go wrong,” I said. “I’ve had more than a few bad days, but the important thing is that I don’t let those setbacks define me. I keep moving forward, even when it feels like everything’s falling apart.”
Tony’s Takeaway:
Tony’s face lit up with recognition. “That’s exactly it. I’ve messed up more times than I can count, but I never stop moving forward. After all, life’s not about avoiding failure—it’s about learning from it and pushing on. The only real failure is giving up.”
He chuckled, thinking back. “Remember that time I tried to create Ultron? Yeah, that was a disaster. But I didn’t let that stop me. I learned from it, got back to work, and kept going. That’s how you win in life—you don’t give up, no matter how many times you fall.”
We’re All Superheroes—Suit or No Suit
As the roadside assistance finally arrived to rescue Tony’s high-tech suit, we wrapped up our conversation. Tony looked at me and said something that’s stuck with me ever since: “You know, we’re both warriors—you’ve just got a different kind of armor.”
He was right. Whether we’re battling supervillains or our own mental health challenges, the fight is real, and the victories we win—over fear, doubt, and setbacks—are just as significant. As I drove off, leaving Tony to get back to saving the world, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s not every day you get to share battle stories with a superhero, but the truth is, we’re all warriors in our own right.
