Life's a whirlwind, isn’t it? Between work, family, and endless to-do lists, finding time to recharge can feel impossible. But here’s a fun secret: taking a 'Recess Break' might be just what you need to bust stress and give yourself a much-needed boost. It’s one of my favorite mental health tools from my book '84 Mental Health Warrior Tools' and I use it multiple times a week to keep stress at bay!
This book is part of the Mental Health Warrior Program, which I created based on my 20-year struggle with Bipolar, Alcoholism, Anxiety Disorders, and PTSD from my time as an EMT with the local rescue squad. It’s a self-help approach so we can all triumph over life’s challenges—including stress!
The Power of the Recess Break
Remember those glorious recess breaks in school? Those precious minutes where you could run wild, play games, or just chill with friends? Well, it turns out those breaks weren't just fun—they were essential for recharging our minds and bodies. As adults, we often forget the importance of taking these non-productive moments. We’re here to remind you that it's okay to pause and have a bit of fun. In fact, it's more than okay—it's necessary!
Why Non-Productivity is Productive
Contrary to popular belief, being busy all the time isn’t the key to success. Taking short breaks to be “non-productive” can actually make you more productive in the long run. It’s like rebooting your computer—sometimes, you need to shut down for a bit to perform at your best. The is the powerful Mental Health Warrior Approach!
Three Fun Ways I Take a “Recess Break”
1. Zombie Shoot’em Up Game
Okay, so maybe shooting zombies in a video game isn’t a skill you’ll need in real life (unless, of course, there’s a sudden zombie apocalypse). But hey, it’s fun! I love taking 15 minutes out of my day to immerse myself in a good old zombie shoot’em up game. It’s a fantastic way to release some pent-up stress and come back to reality feeling refreshed and ready to tackle anything.
2. Music and a Cold Soda
Sometimes, all you need is a little music and a cold soda. I like to take 15 minutes to sit back, listen to my favorite tunes, and sip on a refreshing drink. There’s something incredibly soothing about letting the music wash over you while you do absolutely nothing! It’s the perfect way to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the day and recharge your mental batteries.
3. Porch Sitting
Another favorite of mine is just sitting on the porch, doing nothing but enjoying the sights and sounds around me. I’ll spend 15 minutes basking in the sunshine, feeling the breeze, and letting my mind wander. It’s not about accomplishing anything—it's about giving my brain a break. These moments of stillness are incredibly rejuvenating and help me face the rest of the day with a clearer, more focused mind.
The Recess Break Blueprint
Step 1: Set Aside 5-10 Minutes
Find a time during your day where you can step away from your responsibilities. Make sure this is a time where you won’t be interrupted by emails, phone calls, or other distractions. This is your dedicated time for a "Recess Break."
Step 2: Do Nothing and Enjoy It!
This isn’t the time for meditation or reflection. This is a time to do absolutely nothing—or something completely fun and non-productive. The key is to enjoy it. Let go of the guilt and just be.
Step 3: Tap into Childhood Joy
Remember how recess felt as a kid? Try to tap into that same sense of freedom and joy. Whether it’s playing a quick game, listening to music, or just sitting and watching the world go by, allow yourself to experience that simple pleasure.
Step 4: Recharge
Notice how you feel after your break. Are you more relaxed? Has your stress level decreased? Do you feel more energized? Reflecting on these feelings can help you appreciate the positive impact of your recess break and encourage you to make it a regular practice. Plus, this is the perfect time to officially add this tool to your Mental Health Warrior Toolbelt!
Warriors, Embrace Your Inner Child
In today’s fast-paced world, taking time for yourself can seem like a luxury. But remember, Mental Health Warriors, you have the power to transform your day with just a few small, intentional actions. By incorporating recess breaks into your routine, you can recharge, reduce stress, and elevate your mental well-being. These moments of playful pause are not just a treat; they are essential to sustaining your inner strength and resilience. So, embrace your inner child and make those recess breaks a vital part of your daily mental health strategy. You've got this, Warrior!
Now ready to take your first "Recess Break"? Go ahead and play that zombie game, listen to your favorite song, or just sit and do nothing. It’s time to give yourself permission to be non-productive and enjoy the benefits of a true mental break. You’ve earned it!
